Now let's solve this problem: I sit firmly in the trend of retro helmets. Visually, they look more comfortable on my dome compared to most other helmets.
Look at the back wall of any motorcycle gear shop and you will understand what I mean. 90% or more of full-face helmets have exactly the same shape. If you like these, that's great! There are no haters here.
But what I see from the helmet wall is the lack of more options in this retro style category. Although it has been outdated since 2014, Bell Bullitt has attracted me for a while. Fortunately, I was finally able to get it recently and give it a try.
There are currently other players in the field, most of whom compare Bullitt with the more affordable Biltwell helmets. There are also AGV X3000, Shoei Glamster (Europe only), Arai Defiant, Hedon Heroine and the ridiculously expensive (starting at $1250) Ruby Full Face.
Bullitt sells for $429.95, which is not a cheaper helmet as I said, but you are worth the price here. It has excellent construction quality, high-quality materials, some ventilation devices, optional accessories and the real reason you are here: excellent appearance.
Now that you have seen it, check out how the artificial chrome trim wraps around the face opening and lower part of the helmet. This may be a feature that people will overlook, but this contrast of dark and chrome is an important part of creating a retro atmosphere.
I chose Gloss Black; not every color has chrome trim. Those that are not black.
What further contributes to its vintage definition is the absence of any additional external engraving or character lines in the shell. Except for the very low-key vent on the back of the helmet, what you get here is essentially a classic bubble shape that makes a bold design statement without being annoying.
You can spice up your Bullitt with a bunch of color options, most of which involve some subtle graphics. The Bolt variant uses a stylish circular lightning design around the mask holder and comes in a bright black shell with white graphics or a yellow/black option.
The Flow style exudes the atmosphere of the 70s and 80s, with three stripes around the front and silhouette. There are two options: a glossy gray case with black graphics and a glossy light blue case with dark blue graphics.
The Reverb variant pays homage to the glitter of the 60s and 70s, with the bright black front closed and the rear turned into silver flakes.
Our only solid color options are bright black and bright white, which is kind of weird-but hey, we want classics, right?
Looking for something more unique? The Bell and Helmade collaboration has been integrated into the Bell website, loaded with an excellent interactive experience, allowing you to choose from a range of colors, scripts, and mask options.
I clicked a bunch and found that no matter what I do, the price of custom paint has not changed from $200. Bell deducted $30 from the price of the basic helmet, presumably to get you to spend an extra $160 and stare at the watch, waiting for 6 weeks of delivery of the customized work. Nevertheless, if you are ready to buy a helmet, this is a good choice.
I chose the Gloss Black color scheme and found that the paint is of first-rate quality and evenly executed. The interior uses elegant brown leather and suede, which is very gorgeous and well matched. The suede leather is perforated and breathable, and the leather part is soft. The colors of the two materials match well with each other, and each one feels good.
All of these provide some motivation to keep the interior dust-free and oil-free. We will see how long this momentum lasts. However, there is one thing that all of us need to keep in mind-Bell claims that the lining is "antibacterial" and that it is washable and quick-drying.
When I continue to use it as my main helmet, it will definitely produce some grit and dirt. Once I reach the state that needs washing, I will definitely update this article to explain its performance after washing.
For some reason, my head was decided to be 0.8cm longer this summer (maybe because of the zero haircut during the pandemic?). Although my trusted Bell Custom 500 is small but still fits well, my recent measurements It's 56.7 cm-down according to their size chart, between Bell's S (55-56 cm) and M (57-58 cm).
I finally fixed two sizes to test their fit. S is a little too close to the body, it causes some ear pain when put on/take off, so I focus on M. It comes with 30mm cheek pads, although they did touch my face, there was still a little bit more travel than I wanted, so I picked up the 35mm cheek pads, installed them, and everything listened It looks very real-good contact, even pressure from all directions.
When I move the helmet, moving the helmet from side to side grabs my skin. The helmet also passed the forward and backward roll-off tests mentioned in the Bell General User Guide and Snell and MSF documents.
During multi-day trips and short urban errands, I wore this helmet in the saddle for a long time and did not feel any discomfort.
The same material of the lining continues to be used on the strap cushion, which provides some good protection for the thick and strong webbing of the chin strap. I am confident that the strap will not loosen on its own.
Similarly, the double D-ring is made of thicker steel to hold the strap tightly where you want it. There is a leather pull tab on the D-ring, and the buckle can be easily unfastened by wearing gloves.
I wear a 3/4 helmet for most of my rides. I like the oncoming wind, and I will not be angry because of a light rain or a stray cicada flying to my chin. In other words, I am looking for more protection from my next helmet.
Part of what attracted me to Bullitt was that I could get a full face helmet with proper chin protection, a large face opening and a wide field of vision. In practice, I did not notice any reduction in visibility between Bullitt and my Custom 500.
Then I was curious and put the tape measure on both of them. I was surprised to find that Bullitt's field of vision is actually larger than my Custom 500. I measured Bullitt’s opening at 30.5 cm, and Custom 500 at 29.5 cm.
Bell's biggest area of opportunity here is to reduce wind noise. This is not a quiet helmet. However, you can dial in it in a variety of ways to make it work for you.
I like the option of installing a mask but not always using it. This causes the greatest wind noise at highway speeds (or any speed 35-40 mph north).
Obviously, the helmet is not designed so that the mask is always turned up and used, but I like the wind to blow on my face. If it starts to rain or I end up falling behind, I can choose to turn the protective cover down in my back pocket. A dump truck sprayed gravel at me.
I wear wireless earbuds most of the time, so I use the shield configuration to manage the noise by simply turning up the pitch. However, we recommend that all riders who wish to protect their hearing from wind noise use earplugs.
Flip the protective cover down to solve this problem to a large extent, but there is still wind torn around the seams and face openings of the plastic protective cover. I also tested the noise with the protective cover completely removed-this allows an open experience with a very significant reduction in wind noise.
The mask has anti-fog, anti-scratch and anti-ultraviolet functions. There are no complaints about its performance. I didn't experience any fogging problems, maybe because of Nutra-Fog II coating, small chin vents or a combination of the two, but it never fogged up on me.
The optical system is very good. Several times I went to scratch my face and put my hand into the shield, thinking it was not there. Give the mask a point, I guess?
However, I do have two small questions about shields. In sunny weather, I wear polarized sunglasses for riding. With the mask facing down, some optical phenomena occur-rainbows from various angles. My guess is that it is a combination of polarized lenses and a protective cover coating.
However, this problem is not enough to cause an alarm or affect safety. Although it was obvious at the beginning, I am used to it.
The second problem is that the protective cover does not like thicker microfiber towels-especially when they are dry, especially when used inside the protective cover. The lint will stick, you need to return with a damp cloth (water only) to clean it again.
I recommend using a real lint-free microfiber camera lens cloth (the kind that feels like silk) with a little water, and then let it air dry. Again, this is not a big problem, but it is enough to remind people of the next cleaning solution.
The helmet comes with a clear flat shield and can be customized for some affordable. Bell offers four different flat shields and five bubble shields, each priced at $39.95.
If you are willing to spend less than $450 to pursue a classic, Bullitt will check all options. It's damn sexy, solid construction, and there are tons of color/customization options to make it your own.
The wind noise figure is a bit small, but there are ways to solve this problem. If you are after a retro look and don't want to compromise on quality, functionality or accessories, then you need to check out Bullitt.
